In a written statement released exclusively to FOX News, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said the White House hopes those who received the e-mails without signing up for them were not "inconvenienced" by the messages.

The White House e-mail list is made up of e-mail addresses obtained solely through the White House Web site. The White House doesn't purchase, upload or merge from any other list, again, all e-mails come from the White House Web site as we have no interest in e-mailing anyone who does not want to receive an e-mail," the statement said. "If an individual received the e-mail because someone else or a group signed them up or forwarded the e-mail, we hope they were not too inconvenienced."

Do you believe the White House has

"no interest in e-mailing anyone who does not want to receive an e-mail"

Do you think this response answers the questions about where the White House obtained private email lists and why they used all these addresses in a mass mailing last week?

For those of you who received unsolicited email from the White House, is it reasonable for you to believe your private email was obtained "solely through the White House website?"

In the mass emailing from the White House earlier this week:

Axelrod wrote that opponents are relying on tactics including "viral e-mails that fly unchecked and under the radar, spreading all sorts of lies."

"So let's start a chain of e-mail of our own," he wrote, inviting supporters to forward his message countering claims that Obama's plans would lead to rationing, encourage euthanasia or deplete veterans' health care.

Is this appropriate use of government resources? Should the White House be spamming citizens in a viral chain of their own using private unsolicited emails of US citizens?

Does this sound like a White House with "no interested in e-mailing anyone who does not want to receive an e-mail?"

Yes, they all sat down and figured out how they could spam the most people figuring no one would notice and this way they could get the word out to all those Fox news listeners...makes sense to me...

What they have is no interest in taking responsibility for their actions. Notice how they are always passing the buck.

In our house we are raising teen twin boys and we tease them all the time over the unseen twins that live in our house. We call them "It wasn't me" and "I didn't do it".

I expect it from my kids but my President...well I guess I just expect more.

Earlier this month the President asked Americans for urgent assistance on his website, "Since we can't keep track of all of them here at the White House, we're asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov."

How can the White House honestly stand behind "their lack of interest" in obtaining and sending spam chains to private emails?

I did not get one of the emails. I would consider it an invasion of privacy and wonder if there was legal action possible. It is amazing the hypocrisy that abounds in this administration. It sure is a good thing so much is transparent- I would hate to see what was happening in secret.

Jeff - Do you consider it an invasion of privacy and rush to sue when you get those unsolicited "enhancement" ads in your email inbox? Or do you just hit "SPAM" and get on with your life? That works for stuff like this, too. Of course, if you have never tried to end receiving email of that ilk....

Innocent mistake? Maybe, but what the WH did was still wrong. Gibbs will have to man up and face the reporters on Monday.

Yet the White House ignored repeated offers from FOX News to share with the administration such e-mail addresses, to help determine how the recipients ended up on the White House distribution list.

And were many of those Republicans showing up to town hall meetings solicited? Oooopsie, yes they were from right wing organizations.  They were handing out memos with talking points and strategies like showing up early, taking up all of the front seats and intimidating everyone else to be quiet.

Ooooopsie no. I think citizens right to assemble (even early and in the front row) is very different from email spam by your friendly Federal Government to your private email in order to create a viral chain about a policy they want you to support.

All the while maintaining lists of private emails that they have collected on people who did not voluntarily supply them to the White House. A little different analogy.

I have written the White House to congratulate Obama. I've recieved a couple emails in return. I don't feel paranoid about it at all, and I'm an old hippy. I know PLENTY scenarios to be worried about, but this??? Get a grip.

what if get junk mail in your mail box with your name and address on it ?but you dont know how the business or organization got your name? and what would be the scandal if the white house were sending out emails exclusively to obama supporters ? for democratic eyes only. i wonder if we could force republican candidates from sending me their propaganda campaign junk mail .? by law with a liability ,so if i get one they have to pay me?

they got caught with their hand in the "cookie" jar and now they are back peddling as usual. these people will do the same when they are trying underhanded tactics that garner unpopularity with common citizens. it's ok if they spam but not ok to show up and voice your opinion? onward commie soldiers!

        Dear TopJedi,

Good comment! Sooo Right! I cannot believe this Czar Axelrod is blaming others for his stupid Email, like I said Czars with no accountability. They do work for the federal government so they are accountable to the 1974 Privacy Act.

This can't b e a bad sign . we shouldn't be offended by an attempt ,by our rulers,at diolog with the public.the presidents main man wants our advice and comment. Were just not used to this kind of attention and we don't quite know how to feel.

i responded to the email . i got a nice reply with the chain letter and an outline of a health care plan. I dont want the fed to stick us with the first wallmart version of a potentally great public work..and i don't want them to offshore it.

i did email the white house a month or two ago thats where the got my address.

Just to be clear, they are not rulers, they are represententives. For those who did not ask for email spam itt is not "attention" it is a violation of government on its citizens rights for privacy.

Government has a different standard than Private Industry.
